This Utah Shakespearean Festival production has one actor who is up to that task, and one who falls short. At the Duke on 42nd Street, 229 West 42nd Street, Manhattan; (646) 223-3010. Bringing them to life in all their complexity requires actors who are not only individually adept but who can make us believe their entire worlds revolve around each other. Cleopatra, fearing for her life in light of Antonys increasingly erratic behaviour, sends a false report of her suicide, which prompts Antony to wound himself mortally. Csokass vigorousness accentuates the image of a man whose political and military instincts desert him even as his physical prowess remains at its peak. This device gives fate the weight of almost an auxiliary character in shaping events and seems to be forced only once: when the Soothsayer is the one who delivers the fatal asp in the basket to Cleopatra. Their warm, vibrant colors and light, crinkly material reflect the desert landscape where they live. Lucid though it is, the staging fails to channel the complicated currents of the play effectively. Running time: three hours.
